This is a version of an email I sent to my daughter. She is only 2 1/2 years old, but the email account is a collection of pictures and thoughts I want to share with her as she grows up. It is my hope that she is able to read through the emails when she is older and had a first hand account of the joy she has brought to me and her mother.
The first movie I ever remember seeing in the theater was the original Star Wars (later called "Episode 4: A New Hope"). I was a few months shy of 5 years old when it came out. It was a special part of my childhood, because it was the first time I visited that part of my imagination. The Star Wars universe was the universe I lived in when I wanted to escape - or just take a break from - the real world. I had action figures, posters, sheets, and when the movies came to video - all the videos. I watched the awful "star wars Christmas special" and I bought the star wars cookies. I was all in - Every summer the movie would be re-released in theaters and my aunt Dae Dae would take me and my our cousins to see it.
When the "pre-quels" came out - I saw them, but I was not in on them. They did not fit into "my universe" So I drifted away from the games, lore, stories, etc. Like closing a book.
They are now moving the franchise forward - and using filmakers who grew up like me...fans. I am back in. I watched the live stream panel from a star wars convention while at work and then close my door, watched the second trailer, and had a tear in my eye. I called our aunt Dae Dae, because I wanted to share it with her - now I am sharing it with you (or at least a future you)
Trailer #1:
You actually watched this with me - you were a little more than 2 and even then you knew who was good, who was bad, what was scary and that the robot was cute. At the end, you demanded that I "play it again" and you described it for your mother.
This released today. It was very impactful and has people very touched. Seeing the story movie forward and honoring what made the original movies so great is important to my generation - as we hit middle age, we want to know that the things we cherished from our childhood are being well cared for. I was moved deeply by the imagery and I know many many people in my age group had a similar reaction.
